The INTP and INFP Types of Personalities

Before we delve deeper into personality types, know that the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator does not serve as a strict set of rules, but a general framework to help you understand your personality better.  If you wish to get a proper MBTI evaluation, contact a licensed professional. That being said, we can now move on with our discovery of what zodiac sign is the rarest.

Do you ever wonder what the INTP or INFP acronyms mean? These are two of the 16 MBTI types in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicators. This was created by the mother-daughter tandem of Catherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs-Myers. They built it based on renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung’s Cognitive Process Theory. It states that all people possess dominant functions based on 4 categories. This is how the MBTI personality types came into being.

The categories are as follows:

  • Introversion/Extroversion
  • Sensing/Intuition
  • Thinking/Feeling
  • Judging/Perceiving

The INTP (Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving) and INFP (Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, Perception) combinations are some of the rarest out there. They make up around 3% and 5% of the population, respectively. These folks are creatives who are also curious and idealistic, with a gift for using their brilliance for things they find interesting. At the same time, they can also come off as rebellious, private, and distant. Here’s a breakdown of their five key differences to tell them apart.

Inquisitive or Artistic

The first difference is evident in how they spend their time. INTPs are analytics that involves themselves in mentally-stimulating activities. Puzzles, board games, and books excite them. This type of challenge is what they find to be safe and satisfying. Learning new and quirky stuff is their vibe, and they don’t mind spending hours exploring astronomy or philosophy. The more random, the better.

Consequently, INFPs are creatives who add their personal ‘signature’ to everything they do. They hate anything phony and insincere, or staying stuck in a mediocre job they’re not passionate about, even if they’re compensated generously. When forced to, they will burn out really fast. INFPs lean towards poetry, arts, and music for expressing their overflowing creativity. Just take the likes of William Shakespeare and Thom Yorke who are as gifted as can be.

Contemplative or Value-Driven

decision-making

Decision-making is another difference between these two. INTPs do this by looking at all sides, discovering patterns, or trying out assumptions before coming up with a final decision. Sometimes however they’re stuck with so many choices and go through analysis paralysis.

When this happens they take some time off to isolate and think things over. For the most part, however, they welcome open discussions with everyone who is sharp-witted and forward thinkers like them. But this doesn’t mean they have trouble doing this on their own, pitting opposing ideas and seeing which one comes out on top.

On the other hand, INFPs base their decisions on their deeply-rooted values. They will never compromise if it goes against their belief system. The bottom line is whether or not they are doing the right thing. If the answer is not one, big, fat, “hell, yeah!” then they won’t push through with it. They always look at the bigger picture, if it will be for the greater good or if it will just benefit one or two people. This makes them very pleasant and welcoming company.

Contentious or United

Can you keep your cool during heated debates? Or is it emotionally jarring for you when you go through even the smallest disagreements? INTPs will never beat around the bush, and they don’t mean to be rude, they simply want to get their point across. And they don’t take it personally.

During discourse, they focus on the topic at hand, always keeping in mind that the person itself is not the one in question.  So it is not their intention to hurt other’s feelings. Unfortunately, those who do not know them well can misinterpret their straightforwardness as callousness, egging them on and trying to pick a fight.

INFPs have a different take on this. They’re not obsessed with getting their point across 100% of the time. These folks want to keep things fun, simple, and light-hearted, avoiding arguments as much as possible. Whenever their values are questioned or criticized, they shut down and worry about a possible altercation. But when you push their backs against the wall, they have no trouble lashing out to protect themselves.

Internal or External Conflicts

Some INTPs commonly deal with their emotions in a logical manner- almost like a paradox. Having a low emotional quotient is one thing, but totally avoiding or rationalizing emotions entirely can cause a lot of mental and emotional problems.

Fortunately, there are also healthy INTPs who are well aware of both their own emotions, as well of everyone around them. Think of them as sponges who can absorb what others feel. Thus,  you can always rely on them if you need a listening ear, or a shoulder to cry on.

INFPs on the other hand are not fond of acting like “sponges”. They don’t want to absorb anything, rather, they want to free themselves from anything and everything negative, or things that could bring them down. Their sense of value is rooted deep within, not acquired from the environment they’re exposed to. They are constantly evaluating their thoughts and emotions, and find the need for ‘alone time’ to recharge and rejuvenate.

On Organizing Thoughts

INTPs are independent thinkers who are highly intuitive and can easily spot inconsistencies a mile away (take Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein). These people have the innate capability of coming up with new and innovative solutions.

Meanwhile, INFPs need to find a personal connection with the task at hand for them to excel in it. Thus, journaling is one of the most common ways they use to express themselves. They like using predictability and structure in order to accomplish things. However, this can also cause them to burn out easily.

What Is the Rarest Zodiac Sign? (Least to Most Ranked)

We’ve just covered two of the rarest personality combinations. Their triggers, nuances, and idiosyncrasies. So now we can go to the next part to discover what is the rarest zodiac sign. We’ll tackle five of them, from least to most, plus a surprising revelation at the end.

Capricorn (December 22- January 19)

capricorn

The Capricorn is represented by a mythical creature known as the Sea Goat, which appears to be a half goat and half fish. Thus, this zodiac’s bifurcated abilities. They can navigate both the emotional and material realms. Capricorns are known to be visionaries who are persistent and hard-working. They are humble yet possess quiet confidence within. It is their practical and grounded nature that makes everyone around them feel comfortable. And the older they get, the more childlike, playful, and optimistic they get.

Ironically, Capricorns are perfectionists who make tons of mistakes. This means they won’t stop until all mistakes have been corrected and they end up with the ‘perfect’ product. Unfortunately, they have to be careful or else their rigid work schedule may take a toll on their health and personal relationships. These natives have no trouble disengaging themselves from ties that are slowly disintegrating.

Sometimes they can be quite pessimistic and find it difficult to find the light at the end f the tunnel. Those signs most compatible with them are Virgo, Capricorn, and Taurus, who are their fellow earth signs. But they also have the same emotional language as the water signs, which means they could also hit it off easily with Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio.

Leo (July 23- August 22)

leo zodiac sign

Next up is Leo, which translates to the lion in Latin. The Sun is its phenomenal ruler, the one controlling life and vitality. But unlike other heavenly bodies, the sun will never retrograde. This means it has the power to promote consistency, stability, and loyalty. Leos are often referred to as the kings and queens of the celestial realm. They have no qualms about embracing their royal status while maintaining their confidence, dominance, creative flair, and leadership in the process. Their strength and determination is what makes them accomplish all their goals in life.

These fire signs are also fierce and protective toward their friends and loved ones, overflowing with love, life, and laughter. But when provoked, their pride, jealousy, and egotistical nature could easily come out. This sign is compatible with Aries and Sagittarius, their fellow fire signs. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are also a good fit.

Sagittarius (November 23- December 21)

sagittarius

The third one on our list to know what is the rarest zodiac sign is Sagittarius. It is the ninth zodiac sign which is represented by the mythological creature centaur, with a bow and arrow in hand. This native has a fire element whose upward arrow is representative of this sign’s endless search for spiritual awakening, confidence, and a positive outlook in life.

Sags are dynamic zodiacs oozing with charm, thus, they can easily attract friends and potential partners. They love traveling and exploring the world around them, which brings out their fun and playful nature. However, they can also lack tact sometimes and are eager to please, saying ‘yes’ to things they aren’t even sure they can provide. Moreover, Sagittarians won’t commit unless they find a compelling reason to do so. If nothing, they need a fellow wanderer who can match their own energy. This makes Aries and Gemini the perfect candidates.

Aries (March 21- April 20)

aries

Placing as first runner-up is Aries, which in Latin translates into Ram, thus its zodiac symbol. Some astrologers think each sign learns from the positive and negative experiences of the sign who came before them. In their case, there was a lack of wisdom, so they sometimes go forth with blind optimism. However, they are courageous and persistent, reasonable with amazing leadership skills.

Being a fire sign makes them passionate, creative, and energetic. They don’t live their life full of regrets, for excess baggage from the past will only slow them down. Aries help people out of love and the goodness of their hearts. But they can also be reckless, hot-headed, and fiercely competitive. They can build successful relationships with any sign, but especially those who can share the same energy and respect the things they value. Leo, Sags, and Libra are three of their most ideal matches.

Aquarius (March 21- Arpril 20)

aquarius

Making it to the top of our list, our question of what is the rarest zodiac sign is finally answered. And it’s none other than the mighty Aquarius. It is commonly mistaken for being a water sign because of its prefix “aqua” and its symbol being the water bearer. However, Aquarians belong with the air signs

These are hardcore intellectuals, just like their fellow air signs. They are intuitive, logical, and possess a strong sense of justice. These signs are forward-thinkers and can sometimes come off as rebellious. So they find comfort in being surrounded by like-minded individuals. Aquarius’s most compatible matches are Gemini, Scorpio, and Taurus, who are just as stubborn and opinionated as them.
